Providence

April 28th, 2014 by

In this painting, Russell presents an image of danger averted, but with many details left out, to be filled in by the viewer. The man has narrowly escaped death, as can be seen by the bullet hole in the window. He has some type of patch on his shirt. It has a symbol and a Latin phrase FAC FORTIA ET PATERE. This translates as “Do brave things and endure.” Is he on some type of military mission? His look suggests that a response to the assassination attempt will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, this painting is linked to a song called ‘Providence’ written by the artist’s son, John, and as such this represents a collaboration between father and son. Go to YouTube and type in ‘Dodds-Providence’ to listen to the song written with this painting in mind. The idea of Providence here causes us to think of our destiny and who is ultimately in control of our lives. It is meant to remind us of the Book of Proverbs 16:9 – In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. And Proverbs 21:30,31 – There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord. The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord.
